We walked around and looked at the various features, but did not see a major eruption of anything before they had to leave to get to Canyon before dark.
Instead we watched the Turtle/Tortoise pool erupt, and saw a few things go from a distance. While Castle was no longer being predicted, it was within approximately 12-14 hours of it's last eruption, so we had our fingers crossed. Their younger son really wanted to watch Castle erupt. I'm not sure he believed me.Īfter dinner with our friends, we headed to the geyser basin. Once the wave got established enough to go around, OF ERUPTED! How fun! I spent the rest of the time that afternoon telling my son how amazing I was for causing OF to go. I enthusiastically participated (my son was hiding behind his father at this point). A few minutes later, another person started the wave. I decided it needed a little encouragement and started a slow clap, as if I were at a concert. It was sputtering, but not a big eruption like before. Just before meeting our friends, OF was predicted to go again, so we went to see it. I was very sad that Covid meant that my 3Q room without bath had gone to someone else, but grateful that I had the Snow Lodge cabin backup. The Old Faithful Inn was exactly as amazing and wonderful as you have heard it it.
We left the cabin and wandered around the area-we were walking the basin that night with our friends, post-shower and camp dinner, so we checked out the buildings. The building in an unadorned gravel lot aesthetic wasn't my favorite, but whatever. We unloaded our gear and were impressed with our two queens, table, coffee maker, fridge and safe in the cabin. YES! They let us have a cabin, and, more importantly, gave us WiFi access. So, we went to the Snow Lodge to see if we could check in early. Of course, I needed cell data (no dice) or wifi (not until we check in). After this, I remembered the GeyserTimes app that someone recommened on TripAdvisor ages ago and fired that up. Oh well, we got our geyser predictions and refilled our water bottles. AFter the eruption, we, and all of our OF friends, headed to the visitor's center. My son had not seen anything like that before and was really overwhelmed by it. About 35 seconds later, OF erupted! So cool. On the theory that the larger the crowd = the sooner the eruption, we decided to wait. On the way to the visitor's center we found that there was a huge crowd at OF itself. We were meeting our friends at 5, so they could shower in our bathroom once we'd checked in. After clean up, we decided to go to the visitor's center to get the predictions to plan the rest of our afternoon. I grumpily made sandwiches (I'm not sure you can spread peanut butter more angrily than I did in the OF parking lot that day), and about three bites in we all felt better. Thankfully, we found a spot to park, and someone (probably my husband) insisted on eating something. Probably the fact that it was later than we usually eat lunch and we didn't know where anything was contributed, but wow did we have a family wide meltdown about where to park, what we were doing, or even whether or not to eat lunch. The experience of driving into the OF parking lot was overwhelming. Part three ( Old Faithful Snow Lodge Cabins): BBut its definitely worth the price of admission Go if you get the chance The temporary exhibit of Vikings we skipped because we'd literally seen the exhibit just before the pandemic in Seattle. My geology loving husband was in heaven, as was my dinosaur loving kid. We took the time to visit the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman (Thanks Trip Advisor folks for the recommendation, ages ago) What an amazing place. Oh well, we survived.īozeman brought a much better hotel., and we were within spitting distance (practically) of Yellowstone. One of the beds was unmade, the toilet overflowed, the lobby smelled strongly of cat pee, and the smoke alarm (I noticed in the morning) had duct tape covering it-presumably to keep it from going off. The Oxford Suites in Spokane was in a great location, but was otherwise terrible. We skipped out of afternoon classes on the las t day. Our trip started with an early departure from oniline school. 2019 trip canceled by other circumstances.Ħ/18 Seattle-Spokane (Oxford suites hotel)Ħ/24 Coulter Bay Cabin- Old Faithful Snow Lodge CabinĦ/26 Old Faithful Snow Lodge Cabin - Mammoth CabinĦ/28 Mammoth Cabin-Bozeman (Comfort Suites)Ħ/29 Bozeman-Spokane (Historic Davenport) Have a fun, memorable road trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks, Leaving the day school gets out.
